The Age of Enlightenment opened up inclusive opportunities for women to discuss art, literature, and politics. A Salon would form for the gatherings, perhaps in a hotel or home. The French Salon and others grew out of this need for exchange of ideas, and were hosted by worldly known Madames and Mademoiselles Salonnières of the time. These Salonnières lead the sway of desired concepts and creatives, becoming great influential women of their time.

A wonderful digital collection of writings of Amelia Gere Mason as passed down from her mother from 1891 is a great reference to the women and gathering places that existed. Thank you Theresa Armao and David Widger for your free digital preservation. The image above links to the 18th c section.
